Re-Visit Journal Writing
Goal: To make observations over time, with a focus on identifying and recording change.
Note: This activity requires staying power and planning. Can you realistically revisit the same place three times in a year to record Fall, Winter and Spring, or is it more likely to revisit three times in Sept/Oct to record leaf changes in a single season; or revisit the same location in the morning, noontime and late afternoon to record the sun and shadows within a single day? Instructions: 1. Identify a location which students can visit several times in a year, a season, or a day where noticeable changes will occur (a garden, a tree in Autumn, etc...) 2. Visit #1: record the date, time, and weather of the location. Allow 10 minutes to describe the setting. Allow 10 minutes to draw a specific feature within the setting. 3. Visit #2: record the date, time and weather. Allow 10 minutes to describe the setting. Allow 10 minutes to draw a specific feature within the setting. 4. Visit #3: record the date, time and weather. Allow 10 minutes to describe the setting. Allow 10 minutes to draw a specific feature within the setting. 5. Conclusion #4: Allow students to look at each of their three journal entries and illustrations, then write a summarizing entry in which they compare 3 differences and 3 similarities. 6. Final Project: Have students collect their four pages into a Revisit Journal. Either use the Conclusion entry as a cover page to introduce the changes, or as a conclusion page in the end. |
